Former Town of Pincher Creek Councillor Roger McAdam

February 2, 2023

Former Town of Pincher Creek Councillor Roger McAdam passed away on Feb 2, 2023. Roger served between 2007-2010. Roger's decisions at the Council table were guided by a sense of community, supporting our capacity to come together and problem-solve based on a shared purpose. I appreciated his evidence-informed decision-making and ability to frame difficult decisions through the context of both finance and service to the community. When the tax notices went out, his skill in explaining accounting methodology was well appreciated. He was a gifted communicator who sought understanding between points of view or through sharing how the Council came to a decision.

His time on the Council was brief – one term, but his commitment to the community extended beyond the work of an elected official. As a teacher in this community, he mentored, coached, and taught a generation. Separating Roger's work on Council from his commitment to this community as an entrepreneur, volunteer, and friend is difficult. He always gave 110% whatever the task. He championed recreation for all ages and stages of life, developing safe and walkable neighbourhoods and long-range planning for sustainable growth.

On Council, Roger was passionate about waste reduction and had unique skills for communicating municipal finance – he was a teacher through and through. Through the Recycling Advisory Committee, he initiated the Reuse Fair to educate on waste reduction and swap household items for reuse. Roger's commitment to diverting recyclables from the waste stream led to spirited deliberations at the council table. His assertions that removing cardboard from household garbage would reduce kilometres travelled by the garbage truck was backed up by the calculations demonstrating how recyclables in garbage added unnecessary wear and tear to the fleet.

Roger's enthusiasm was infectious. He always saw the best in this community and worked to bring the best in us. He was happy to lend a hand and always showed up, whether on track and field day or facing contentious issues. He will be missed but lives on in all the ways he influenced this community.

The Flag at the Town office flies at half mast today in honor of Roger. A celebration of Rogers's life will be held this afternoon.
