Presentation to Council

November 20, 2020
Email update to participants & those who have requested to receive updates.

Good Afternoon,

Just over a year ago, the Town of Pincher Creek, with support from InnoVisions and Associates, started the process of creating a Community Economic Development Strategy or CEDS.

Project Objective:
To develop strategies and action plans that best utilize community assets and advantages to support the existing business community and encourage new business investment.

At the Awards of Excellence, which was held at the end of October 2019, Mayor Anderberg invited the business community and interested residents to collaborate with the Town on the development of the strategy. In November, December and January, one on one community consultations were hosted, and two Community Café Round Tables were facilitated.

On March 17th (the day when COVID-19 started to greatly impact our community), the "What we Heard" document was reviewed and discussed by Town Council. This presentation was developed by InnoVisions and Associates, and it outlines our community's strengths (assets), opportunities and aspirations as well as the steps that can be taken to leverage economic development. The document also provides some key demographic information for Pincher Creek. This document was created from the round tables, business consultations and conversations InnoVIsions hosted with our community, this is what they heard us say.

At the end of March, it was decided that the pandemic was top priority, and we needed to support our local businesses now. The CEDS was subsequently pivoted into the Business Recovery Support Program (BRSP), and the strategy was put on hold. It is important to note, however, that economic development did not pause, and we actually ramped up and were able to actively support our local economy and business owners immediately.

We are now circling back to the CEDS with additional information from our businesses and more determination than ever. This will ensure our strategy is action based and solid for Pincher Creek.

Today, we would like to share the "What we Heard" document with all those who attended the Community Café and those who have asked to stay in the loop.

On Monday, November 23rd at 6 p.m., we will be presenting a November Update to Town Council which includes time frames for the completion of the strategy. Council Meetings are open to the public, and we would welcome anyone interested to attend virtually. There will not be an opportunity at the council meeting to answer questions. However, my inbox is always open, and I'm happy to discuss your questions via phone. To attend virtually, please click here on Monday prior to 6 p.m.

We are excited to be moving towards the final stages of the strategy creation and to have a plan for our next steps. Thank you for your patience and support, as 2020 was certainly not the year that anyone had planned.

Sincerely,

Marie Everts

Pincher Creek Moves Forward with Business Strategy

October 16, 2019

The Town of Pincher Creek announces the launch of a community building project to design an economic development strategy.  “Our town needs a coordinated plan that helps our businesses to thrive and grow as a key part of a vibrant community” says Mayor Don Anderberg. “Our community depends on the success of our businesses in so many ways. It is incumbent upon us to do what we can to foster their success.”

Council and the Town administration will be working with InnoVisions and Associates, a consulting firm specializing in economic development, on the multi-faceted project entitled ‘Building a Community Economic Development Strategy for Pincher Creek’. InnoVisions will be leading the project, supported by Senior Administration, and will look at the community through the lens of business to ensure that we are best utilizing our assets and advantages to encourage business investment.    This project is possible because of the funding received by Alberta Economic Development, Trade and Tourism through the Community and Regional Economic Support (CARES) program.

Extensive community engagement will take place through interviews with business owners, community leaders and interested members of the public.  This consultation begins now and extends to January 2020. By the end of March 2020, the work will be completed, and the Town will report back to the community on key findings and recommendations for future development.

“At the end of this project, we will have some clear strategies and plans on where we are going, how we are going to get there and who’s going to do what to ensure a dynamic business community” says Laurie Wilgosh, Town of Pincher Creek CAO.
