Municipalities Ready to Respond Together
August 28, 2019
Today at 1:00 p.m. at the Pincher Creek Fire Hall, three identical bylaws were signed. These three bylaws ensure our communities are prepared to respond collectively to a disaster or major emergency. M.D. Reeve Brian Hammond, Town of Pincher Creek Mayor Don Anderberg and Village of Cowley Mayor Warren Mickels were all present to sign the document and commit to the collaborative partnership.
The bylaw clearly outlines:
-
Roles and responsibilities during a disaster
-
Governance and oversight of the Emergency Management Program
-
Over 50 organizations and key roles that help develop and participate in our disaster plans, such as fire, police, schools and our hospital
-
Cost-sharing
-
Roles and responsibilities in preparing for a major event or disaster
-
The declarations for a state of local emergency when required
The Pincher Creek Regional Emergency Management Organization (PCREMO) was created in 2016 by the M.D. of Pincher Creek, the Town of Pincher Creek and the Village of Cowley. PCREMO is currently updating the Emergency Management Plan for our region. The organization will also be the leader in training staff and volunteers over the next two years who could assist in a major event. A public engagement and education session will be announced in the coming months, and the date for this event will be scheduled around Emergency Preparedness Week.
The three identical bylaws signed today adhere to the requirements from the Province for 2020 and beyond. Disasters that cross boundaries will now be managed with increased effectiveness and our regional partnership has been strengthened. Our region works best when we are working together!
