Lori Kunkat, an LPN at the local hospital, spent her birthday trying to decide how best to spend her new-found money which came in the form of a winning scratch ticket. Kunkat said her daughter bought two $10 Super Set for Life tickets and gave one to her mom as a birthday present. And what a birthday present. “I’m doing great (now),” Kunkat said after the big win. “But I am still in disbelief, of course.” After taking some time to plan things out with a financial consultant, the family plans to invest some of the money and use what’s left to pay off debt, take a vacation, build a new home “and take care of my four kids,” she added. All that new found wealth hasn’t made the family eager to pack up and leave town either. The plan is to continue working as a nurse and go through the proper channels in securing time off for holidays — just like everyone else. “We’re going to stick around the area. (As for my career), I really enjoy the job and I have put in so many years that I wouldn’t want to throw away (things) like my benefits. I’m not going to change that.” When Kunkat won the lottery, she was given the option by the Western Canada Lottery Corporation to accept her winnings in the form of a $2,000 weekly pay cheque or opt for a lump sum of $2 million. Her justification for the lump sum was if she were to take the weekly money and suddenly die, the money would stop. “If I died next week, I’d only get $2,000!” she said. For now Kunkat will just take things in and formulate her plans to travel to Mexico in the near future with her husband. She will also rest well in the knowledge she can give her children things she never had. “Mostly I am excited about the future for my kids,” she said. Alberta is a hotbed of lottery winnings with three new millionaires in the last five days. Pincher Creek has also seen its share of lotto winners with Doug McClain of Pincher Creek winning $10 million in the Super 7 lottery draw in April. © Copyright by Lethbridge Herald.com |
